How long does SEO take to work?
Four to six months before organic search produces meaningful lead volume in a competitive local market. Technical fixes and Google Business Profile work can move rankings within weeks; content and authority compound over quarters. Anyone promising first page in 30 days is either targeting terms nobody searches or is about to do something that gets your site penalized.

What moves in weeks
Some work produces visible change quickly, because it removes an obstacle rather than building an asset:
- —Fixing indexation problems. A page Google could not crawl cannot rank; once it can, it ranks on its existing merit almost immediately.
- —Google Business Profile completeness — categories, services, hours, photos, service area. This is the single fastest lever in local search and the most commonly left half-finished.
- —Removing technical drag: broken canonicals, duplicate hosts, pages that took nine seconds to load.
- —On-page work against terms where you already sit on page two. Moving from position 14 to 8 is a different problem from arriving from nowhere.
What takes quarters
Authority and topical coverage do not respond to effort in the same month it is spent. Search engines are deliberately conservative about promoting a site that has not demonstrated durability, and that conservatism is the entire reason ranking is worth anything.
This is also why organic cannot be bought forward. You can spend twice as much and finish somewhat sooner, but you cannot spend your way past the observation period.
Why the honest answer costs agencies business
A prospect who needs revenue this quarter does not want to hear four to six months. The commercially convenient move is to imply faster, sign the retainer, and hope month three looks encouraging enough to survive the conversation.
That is how under-funded retainers get canceled at month three — one month before organic work typically starts paying, which is the worst possible moment to stop. If you need revenue inside the quarter, paid search is the honest recommendation and organic is the one that follows it. Our diagnostic returns that answer routinely, even though the SEO retainer is worth more to us.

How long does local SEO take?
Google Business Profile improvements can shift map-pack visibility within two to six weeks. Ranking organically for competitive local service terms across multiple cities is the four-to-six-month figure. The gap between those two is why "local SEO" quoted as one timeline is usually misleading.
Is doing local SEO worth it?
Run the arithmetic before deciding. Multiply your average customer value by your close rate to find what one additional lead is worth, then ask how many additional leads per month would cover the work and by what margin. If it does not clear comfortably within the compounding window, it is not worth it yet — and a competent agency will tell you so.
What is the 80/20 rule in SEO?
The observation that a small share of pages and terms produce most of the organic value. It is useful as a prioritization instinct — fix the pages that already almost work before building new ones — and useless as a strategy on its own, because which 20% matters is specific to your site and has to be measured.
Can I do SEO myself?
The Google Business Profile work, yes, and you should — nobody knows your services and service area better than you. Technical diagnosis, competitive analysis and content architecture are where owner-led SEO usually stalls, not because they are unlearnable but because they need tooling and a time budget most operators do not have.
